Unisex uniforms for school and work, the debate comes to Congress

The debate about school uniforms differentiated by sex has arrived at the Congress of Deputies. We can have registered a non-Law proposal asking the Government to prohibit differences between uniforms for boys and girls; that is there is only one model for both.

But the proposal of this political party does not remain solely in the school environment, because Podemos also urges to eliminate differences in male and female uniforms in the workplace.

Modifications in the Equality Law

We can, wants the Government modify in the shortest possible time the Law of Equality to avoid the "imposition of uniforms differentiated by sex"both in public, concerted and private schools, and in the workplace, and guarantee"freedom of dress".

In the registered text, the spokeswoman for Unidos Podemos, Sofía Castañón, points out that school uniforms differentiated by sexes maintain gender stereotypes in school, in addition to limiting the physical action of girls.

According to Europa Press, the initiative of Podemos states that differentiating school uniforms (pants for boys and skirt or dress for girls) contributes to the "segregation of sexual roles"and one"sexual objectification of women's bodies".

The training also emphasizes that this difference that begins at school is "then perpetuates in the workplace in sectors where the image and body of women is offered as an erotic claim to mainly male consumption, such as flight attendants, hostesses at conferences or sports awards"

We saw a few weeks ago as the uniform without gender also begins to be established in some British schools, which have wanted to respond to the demands of students who asked for comfort and equality when dressing.
