Bexsero vaccine: administration guidelines change if vaccinated after three months

The Bexsero vaccine fact sheet has been modified, and the Vaccine Committee of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics has just published how these changes affect the parents who decide give this vaccine for the first time to your children between three and five months old.

Until then, the vaccination schedule from two to five months was four doses in total (3 + 1 recall dose between 12 and 23 months). It has now been seen that the vaccine is equally effective at reducing a dose as long as it is vaccinated after three months.

Four to three doses after three months

Until last June 28, the vaccination schedule with Bexsero consisted of four doses (3 + 1 recall) when administered to babies between two and five months of age. From six to 23 months, the doses were reduced to three (2 + 1 recall).

But now, the vaccine fact sheet has changed and with it the vaccination schedule for those babies who receive the first dose of Bexsero between three and five months. For this age group, four doses will no longer be necessary as before, but it will be enough with three: 2 doses in primary vaccination with a minimum interval of two months between doses + 1 recall dose between 12 and 15 months.

The minimum interval between doses for children who also receive this vaccine for the first time between two and 10 years. With the previous vaccination schedule, the interval between doses should be at least two months, while now a month of difference between one dose and another is sufficient.

"Reduce the doses needed to complete the vaccination cycle from four to three with a similar immune response It reduces costs and makes it easier for babies. Depending on the epidemiology or local recommendations, the Bexsero 2 + 1 guideline is a new option to complete the vaccination cycle to protect infants against meningitis B infection "- the Medical Director of Infosalus told GSK Vaccines, Thomas Breuer.

For the rest of the age groups, vaccination patterns and intervals between doses remain the same. Y in the case of infants who receive the first dose of Bexsero at two months The guideline is still four doses: 3 in primary vaccination + 1 souvenir dose between 12 and 15 months.

This modification of the technical file has been admitted based on the results of a recently published clinical trial conducted by the University Hospital of Santiago, and conducted in Spain, Hungary, Peru and Brazil.

About Bexsero

The Bexsero vaccine arrived at our pharmacies in October 2015 and protects against meningococcus B, a bacterium responsible for infections such as meningitis and meningococcal sepsis.

Anyone can suffer from meningitis, but infants, children under 5, and adolescents are the highest risk groups. Hence, pediatricians recommend vaccination in childhood.

Currently, the Bexsero is not included in the official vaccine schedule, so parents who wish to give it to their children must purchase it in pharmacies for a price of 106.15 euros the dose.

With this new vaccination schedule, infants vaccinated for the first time between three and five months will see reduced doses, which it will mean significant savings for families. However, it is important for the pediatrician to assess each specific case and recommend when it is the best time to vaccinate your baby.
