World Breastfeeding Week 2009: breastfeeding as a shield

Every year, between August 1 and 7, the World Breastfeeding Week. As you know, in the blog we are fervent advocates of breastfeeding and we can not miss the opportunity to celebrate and continue to contribute to promoting it.

As Mireia told us in May, this year the motto chosen is “Breastfeeding: a vital response in emergencies”.

To illustrate this year's campaign they have chosen a shield that makes clear reference that breast milk is the best protection for children, the most vulnerable in emergency situations such as malnutrition, infectious diseases, lack of drinking water, catastrophes, etc.

But it is not only a very valuable protection tool for children in third world countries, which triple their chances of survival, but also for the child population of the rest of the world since breastfeeding provides safe, sustainable and with great advantages both nutritional and affective for mothers and babies.

As every year, in 2009 UNICEF together with its allies, WHO and the World Alliance for Breastfeeding have wanted to remember once with this initiative and through numerous celebratory events that take place in more than 120 countries around the world that Breastfeeding saves lives.

Another of the challenges of the campaign is information. Encourage among mothers, professionals and the media the vital role of breastfeeding and promote active support before and during emergency situations.
