HELLP syndrome

He HELLP syndrome It is a rare and very serious disease that occurs during pregnancy. It can start quickly, even in the postpartum period, although it is more frequent during the last trimester of pregnancy.

HELLP stands for hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count. Women who suffer from it may have bleeding, liver and blood pressure problems, inconveniences that can do a lot of damage to both the mother and the baby.

The symptoms of HELLP syndrome are: nausea, vomiting, headaches, exhaustion, swelling (especially in the face and hands) and pain in the upper right abdominal area; You rarely notice bleeding gums. Approximately 10 percent of pregnant women with severe preeclampsia develop this disorder, although it can also occur without preeclampsia between 2 and 7 days before delivery. It is likely that if the pregnant woman has this syndrome during one pregnancy, she will develop it again during the next one; The second time, usually, is less serious.

Statistics indicate that those who are most likely to have this disease are white women and over 25 years of age, as well as those moms who already had children or those who have previously had a problem with a pregnancy.

The main treatment for HELLP syndrome is to give birth to the baby. This may have to happen before the due date for delivery. A couple of days after giving birth, most women with the disease begin to feel better. The doctor may prescribe a steroid. In case of bleeding, it may require blood transfusions.

There is no preventive treatment for this disease. The best thing you can do, as we always recommend, is to visit the doctor regularly.
