Use of cosmetics in pregnancy

There are many myths about the use of cosmetics during pregnancy that many times scare and confuse us.

But we should know that not all cosmetics are harmless and that any medicine or product applied to the skin and mucous membranes is absorbed, passes into the maternal blood and, therefore, can also affect the fetus.

For example, the use of creams indicated for sun-produced skin aging that contain retinol or derivatives in its composition is not recommended, since it has been shown that retinoids, administered orally, are associated with the occurrence of numerous malformations in the fetus Sunscreens do not pose a risk since they remain in the superficial layer of the skin and their absorption is minimal. On the contrary, pregnant women should use a high protective factor to avoid the appearance of the so-called gravid chloasma (dark spots that appear on the skin).

Deodorants can be used, except those containing aluminum salts and used for large surfaces such as hands or feet. Perfumes also do not harm the fetus.

Makeup products, as well as masks, are also harmless to the development of the fetus.

Hair dyes can be used during pregnancy, except for so-called progressive ones (mostly used by men), which may contain lead salts.

Finally, it has not been shown that the use of chemicals to straighten or curl the hair has effects on the fetus or newborn.
