High blood pressure and breathing disorders during sleep

A study conducted by scientists at the University of Texas School of Medicine and presented today at the conference of the Council for Pressure Research, states that almost 60% of children who have high blood pressure suffer from a breathing disorder during sleep (SDB).

The main author of the study recognizes that the relationship between blood pressure and Breathing Disorders during Sleep in adults was already known, but they needed to check if it also happened in the child population.

Respiratory Disorder during Sleep, in which there is an obstruction of the airways, can occur completely, called apnea, partially or hypoapnea or in longer periods of insufficient air displacement, known as obstructive hypoventilation. Suffering from this type of disorder seriously damages children, as it causes long periods of fatigue during the day, drowsiness, hyperactivity, increased pressure in the lungs, poor school performance and since it affects intellectual capacity.

It seems that hypertension is an additional risk to suffer a Breathing Disorder during Sleep, but more studies should be done to know the relationship between them.
