Giving birth in the street, can it happen to me?

In the last week three women have starred in the news who were surprised by the birth of their children without giving them time to get to the hospital.

We have left a woman who has given birth in a taxi to the cry of “already here” and two others who have given birth in an ambulance on the way to the hospital, including one of them without knowing she was pregnant. I will never be able to understand such disconnection so as not to find out what a child is inside, but let's get back to ours.

Without a doubt, this frequency has been the product of chance. Giving birth in the street is not an everyday thing. But anyone who is waiting for a baby has some concern. Could something like this happen to me? Is it so usual?

For your information, SAMUR attends 25 deliveries on public roads throughout the year in the Community of Madrid, that is, emergency deliveries are not common.

On the other hand, for a child to get out of his mother's gut just like that is not so simple. In the vast majority of women, labor is a process that takes time, in some more than in others, it is usually painful and of course there are certain indications that give us time to get to the hospital without any problems, such as the rupture of the amniotic sac and / or the rhythmic and frequent contractions, clear signs that labor has begun and that they have plenty of time to go to the hospital.

If the signs have not yet appeared and the delivery is imminent, you must remain calm, ask for help, notify the health services and, above all, trust yourself and your baby and remember that for years women did not give birth in hospitals.

Likewise, to avoid an emergency delivery, it is essential to be well informed and to have adequate medical follow-up throughout pregnancy.
