4D ultrasound, what to consider before hiring it?

In previous entries we talked about the great revolution that has led to ultrasound for prenatal controls and the novelty of 4D ultrasound, a three-dimensional ultrasound that adds the component of being able to see the baby moving in real time.

We have commented on why to do it and also what is the best moment of pregnancy to perform it and be able to enjoy the best images of your baby in the womb.

Now, I have found out in several centers in Madrid some details that you should keep in mind when deciding to be able to choose the site that offers the best price and service. Not all centers offer the same conditions.

What should we keep in mind before deciding on one center or another.

  • The price: the price of 4D ultrasound ranges between 150 and 180 euros. At least in Madrid I have not seen lower prices and there are where I have been asked for up to 222 euros (and they did not ensure the recording of images because "it depends on the specialist"). In any case, the average is 150-160 euros, a considerable sum to ensure that they provide us with a good service.

If we prefer the 4D ultrasound service at home costs 180 euros. It is somewhat more expensive but we have the advantage that they come home where we are calm and the family we want can witness the echo.

  • Technology: it seems obvious, but first of all make sure that the center has the ultrasound to perform 4D ultrasound, that is to say a 3D ultrasound (three-dimensional) in which we see images of the baby with the appearance of volume and add the movement component.
  • Duration: the duration of the ultrasound is approximately 20-30 minutes. In some centers they complement 4D ultrasound with a 2D ultrasound, the traditional one, to observe fetal measurements, weight, placenta, amniotic fluid, etc.
  • Recording: ask if they record the ultrasound images and in what format. Most of you record the moving images on a DVD as if it were a video and some photos, static images taken from the ultrasound, on a CD.

Ask how many minutes of ultrasound they record since in some centers they record it complete and in others only a few minutes, it also asks how many images are stored on the CD. Of course, on the day of the appointment do not forget to bring a DVD-R (rewritable) and a CD.

  • Extras: there are also certain extras that can help you decide as background music in the recordings or the delivery of a medical report with the ultrasound details. Do not forget that it is a diagnostic method.
  • One last recommendation: inform yourself in advance to make sure you have an appointment at the center you have chosen. Keep in mind that the best period to get an ultrasound is between 24 and 30 weeks of gestation.
