Protect, warn and help: how to act in a child accident

Accidents are much more frequent than we think, especially those that occur at home. The Spanish Society of Pediatric Emergencies (SEUP) offers a manual to know how to act in case of a child accident, where he explains different cases.

The sequence of action in any accident should be called "PAS" (Protect, Warn, Help). These are steps that, although we never want to have to apply, it is good to remember, since home accidents are among the leading causes of infant mortality:

  • Protect: First of all, you must ensure the protection of the injured person and the person who is going to help you.
  • Warn: we can notify the emergency services (in Spain at 112) or call the toxicology information service in the case of poisoning (in Spain it is number 915620420).
  • Relief: once you have protected and warned you can practice first aid to the injured.

In any case, it does not mean that it is easy to follow this order, because I believe that any father in the face of the fright of seeing his injured son the first thing he would try to do is to help him.

But we have to think that if we do not protect we can end up injured ourselves too, without the possibility of helping the little one, and if our help does not help him (we may not know how to do it, or not apply the technique well ...) and we have not notified the services of emergency we will not have another possibility to help him.

In the document published by the SEUP, which we can download in pdf format, different accidents appear: electric shocks, choking, toxic products, wounds, falls or blows and burns. In each case there are indications about what to do step by step, what not to do, and the kit we would need.

On domestic accidents, in addition, I recommend a couple of interesting resources that we have ever talked about: the online game of Teo and Bea to prevent accidents or the website Home Accidents.

Definitely, This manual guides us on how to act in case of a child accident, giving us clues about how to help children face the most frequent mishaps.
