One in one hundred and fifty children is autistic

Autism is a disorder that affects some of the brain functions and alters the behavior of children when it comes to relating to the world around them. It is believed that one in one hundred and fifty preschoolers is autistic, although many would still be undiagnosed.

On April 2 the World Autism Awareness Day, a date to sensitize the world about the rights of autistic people to live fully and with dignity, as well as to have the same opportunities as any other person to develop their abilities.

So far, the cause of autism is unknown, but there are a variety of risk factors linked to the disorder, a complex interaction between the environment and genetics. There is no cure yet, but the quality of life of these children can improve markedly with appropriate therapies. Therefore, the earlier the problem is detected, the better its evolution will be.

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are extremely sensitive children. They are not sick, but children who have a syndrome whose main symptoms are isolation and inability to social relationships.

To commemorate the World Autism Awareness Day, a documentary that has been nominated at the Goya prices entitled "María y Yo" in which the story of an irony, humor and sensibility is told is recorded father and his autistic daughter of 14 years.
