American mothers delay their motherhood more, but they also have more children

The issue of the age at which women decide to become mothers is one that lately has given much to talk about. We have seen certain trends in some countries like Spain, where there are more and more women who delay the moment of having children, as well as the tendency to have only one child.

However, although it may seem like a worldwide trend, there are other countries where it does not happen in the same way. In the United States it was found for example, that indeed Women are waiting longer to become mothers for the first time, but it has also been observed that they now have more children than in previous years.

In an investigation conducted by the Pew Research Center, it was found that the number of women who were in the last years of their reproductive life and who were mothers had increased in 2016, compared to the one that existed 10 years ago.

Currently 86% of women between 40 and 44 are mothers, while in 2006, 80% of women in that same age range were. This means that again the number of women who decide to become mothers is increasing, as it was in other decades.

In addition, now also American women are having more children. In 2006, for example, mothers had an average of 1.86 children, while now they have 2.07. The trend indicates that again the families of two or three (or maybe even more) children are becoming commonplace again.

Regarding age, it has been delayed over time, because while in 1994 the majority became mothers at 23, currently that happens until the age of 26.

Why does all that happen? There are several reasons, among them it happens that many women leave maternity "for later" and focus mainly on their career, mainly to achieve greater economic stability or because they want to continue studying to prepare better.
