Citizens want to raise the paternity and maternity leave by law up to 34 weeks

Citizens have announced that they plan to present a proposal for conciliation law tomorrow that would extend up to 34 weeks paternity and maternity leave, 17 weeks for each parent, to promote conciliation as an "equality mechanism" between men and women.

With that, in addition to extend permissions which is currently enjoyed, the permits would be equated for recent moms and dads to favor co-responsibility and eliminate the labor gaps that affect women after becoming mothers.

How would it be implemented?

It is stated that each parent takes ten weeks non-transferable. Then, ten more weeks that can be shared between both parents.

Those fathers and mothers who distribute themselves these weeks in an equitable manner, that is, five for mom and five for dad, will also be given as a bonus two more weeks to each parent, which would add a total of 17 weeks for each.

Currently, parents enjoy four weeks, which would mean at least six weeks for them than today. For their part, mothers currently enjoy 16 weeks, and could earn at least one more week (if taken equitably) or a maximum of four more weeks, which could extend the period until twenty weeks for the mother.

It would be closer, but it still would not reach the six months of maternity leave that some sectors require that at least the time recommended by WHO for exclusive breastfeeding be respected.

Other conciliation measures

Within the rules of the law, it also provides for a 100% bonus in Social Security contributions for workers who are in use of their maternity or paternity leave, as well as the self-employed.

Five week paternity leave

Remember that the extension of four to five weeks for parents was recently approved in Congress, in the absence of final approval in the Senate and to announce the date of entry into force.

Like Citizens, Unidos Podemos has also proposed to equate paternity and maternity leave as a priority of the new socialist government. Claims as "requirement" the implementation of 16-week non-transferable permits for each parent.

Rivera's formation recognizes that he hopes to have enough support once this law is processed in the Lower House. We will have to see if the proposal, which will be registered on Friday in Congress, is only in an intention or comes to fruition and allows us to approach other European countries in matters of family conciliation.
