Eczema affects almost 20% of European children

In the third edition of the Dermopediatrics Course organized by the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, the specialists indicated that Eczema is one of the most frequent diseases in the child population, affecting 10-20% of European children and this may be due to the western way of life.

According to Dr. Carmen Herrero, Head of the Dermatology Service of this hospital, “the uncomfortable symptoms caused by this disease, such as the intense itching that prevents sleep, cause great disturbance in the affected child, but also in the family environment”

According to specialists, the incidence of eczema is mainly due to the western lifestyle, pollution, maternal smoking, the mother's age, the reduction of breastfeeding, etc. The positive is that there is a great advance in the treatment of certain persistent or chronic skin diseases, which are new drugs, especially those of topical application, which are capable of replacing high-potency corticosteroids.

The specialists provided recommendations to avoid eczema, such as not bathing children more than once a day or having them long in the water. They also recommend not to pour soap into water, but apply it directly to certain areas of the body.
