A new treatment against retinopathy in premature children has been applied for the first time in Spain

The struggle to improve the living conditions of newborns is constant, sometimes unsuccessful, but this time it has provided the desired results. It has just been applied a new treatment against retinopathy in a premature newborn which had only 1,300 grams of weight and 33 weeks of gestation with a very satisfactory result, as indicated by the specialists of the Children's Hospital of Zaragoza who have practiced the treatment.

This new treatment was announced a few months ago during the First World Retinopathy Congress, the Miguel Servet Children's Hospital of Zaragoza wanted to try it as soon as possible, since the treatments they had against retinopathy were not totally effective, especially if the newly Born had very little weight. The new treatment is a great step that will allow, among others, to treat different types of retinopathy, but focusing on the retinopathy of premature children, we must indicate that it affects children aggressively, as blood vessels grow in a very anarchic way seriously affecting the retina of the little ones. Thanks to the treatment, which consists of the use of intravitreal injections with a new drug, the growth of the vessels is slowed and therefore, the application of the laser to destroy the immature part of the retina is totally effective.

Many premature children have some type of retinopathy and this is associated with weight, the lower it is, the greater the chances of suffering from the disease. The new treatment used in premature infants is effective, leaving minimal sequelae and preserving virtually all vision.

The door of hope is now open so that premature children have no vision problems in their development. Congratulations to the specialists who have participated in the intervention.
