Epidural anesthesia could be replaced by an analgesic gas

A little over a year ago we announced the approval of a new drug that would relieve pain in short medical interventions, we talked about analgesic gas suitable for both adults and children. Well, this analgesic gas composed of 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide is offered at the Hospital de La Plana, in Villarreal (Castellón), as alternative method to epidural anesthesia, resulting also harmless for the baby.

It does not have to replace it completely, the mother can start the process of childbirth by inhaling the gas, which causes the neutralization of brain nerve transmissions (those of pain among others), and end with epidural anesthesia.

The analgesic gas is administered through a suction nozzle that is in the hands of the mother, when the contraction occurs it breathes the gas, thus the most intense effect of the drug coincides with the moment of contraction and pain. As stated by the Department of Health of the Valencian Community, "is another step in the humanization of childbirth," and is that the Hospital de La Plana, in addition to being the first to offer this alternative to women who are going to give birth , it has the different means for pregnant women to have a traditional birth and a Non-Medicalized Birth, they have chairs for vertical delivery and also balls to alleviate the pains by exercising.

According to the data offered by this hospital, six out of ten parturients request the method of Non-Medical Delivery to give birth.

The analgesic gas is a drug that is used more regularly in British maternity hospitals, in our country, its inclusion in many hospitals is being studied, since it is a safe and effective pain control method. Would you request it?
