"Growth" milks are not necessary

Milk is the fundamental food of babies. As we have explained many times the O.M.S. recommends breast milk up to at least two years of age and, if this is not possible, milks adapted to the nutritional needs of children. However, milks called "growth" proliferate that the publicity insists on recommending suitable for children older than one year and that are enriched to make them better for them. Parents buy them believing that their child will be better fed with them. However, according to a report from the O.C.U. (Organization of consumers and users), "growth" milks are not necessary.

A few years ago a new type of infant milk appeared, called growth, enriched with vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. Recommended for children from one to three years, we present it as a transitional milk between maternal and cow's milk. Today we find it easily in the supermarket or in the pharmacy next to the most common offer of start and continuation formulas.

The study reveals that these milks they do not suppose any food advantage and that even their high sugar and calorie content make them unsuitable for children. If we put on a balance the supposed benefits of growth milk and its clear disadvantages, we see that, really, they are not necessary. The conclusion of the study is this:

The best option is a varied and balanced diet, assuming a healthy child. Only if there is any problem of appetite is it recommended to drink this type of milk. Of course, always after consulting the pediatrician to rule out any other problems in the child's health.
