Diarrhea: diet recommended and not recommended for children

As I said yesterday, diarrhea is a very common disorder among children, especially among children under 2 years. I also told you what to do in case the child suffers from acute diarrhea, that is, an increase in the frequency of stool of liquid or pasty consistency lasting less than two or at most three weeks and due to an infection (virus, bacteria or parasites). Then there is talk of chronic diarrhea and the reasons can be varied.

When a picture of diarrhea occurs, the main thing is to rehydrate the child and monitor the general condition of the child and the stool. We talked yesterday in detail about this.

Once the dehydration has been corrected, we must begin to gradually reintroduce the feeding. Contrary to popular belief, fasting does not help diarrhea heal faster. On the contrary, adequate food helps reduce the duration of diarrhea.

It is recommended to offer the child small amount of food more times a day, especially if the diarrhea is accompanied by vomiting. On the other hand, it is not advisable to introduce new foods into the child's diet while the diarrhea lasts.

Not any food is indicated for a child with diarrhea. There are more suitable foods to treat it and others that we should avoid.

Recommended diet:

In the case of nursing babies: it is not recommended to suspend breastfeeding, on the contrary, babies fed with breast milk on demand heal faster than those who only receive oral serum.

In the event that the baby drinks formula milk, it is preferable to consult the pediatrician which one he recommends. In some cases, formulas without lactose are recommended, but this should be decided by the doctor. In any case, it is not recommended to suspend milk in babies.

Low-fat foods and cereals such as rice, wheat, bread, non-fat meats such as chicken and fish, vegetables such as potatoes and carrots, and yogurts should continue. All these foods must be maintained. You can prepare, for example, a porridge with water, carrot, chicken breast and rice, or a cereal porridge with rice flour or cornstarch. For the snack fruit porridge with banana and apple.

Diet not recommended

Not recommended: raw fruits and vegetables, green leafy vegetables (chard, spinach, lettuce), sugary drinks such as cola or juices, nuts, meats and very fatty fish, rooms, candies and the chocolates.
