Gifts, especially toys, come in flashy boxes and prepare them with the most nice papers. All this generates a huge amount of waste that goes to the trash and helps pollute the planet.
While the rest of the year each person generates a kilo and a half of garbage a day (30 years ago it was not even half a kilo), these days are two kilos; and half are wrappers and packaging.
Ecologists in Action proposes some simple tips to reduce waste generated at Christmas parties.
.
• Every time something is bought, it is important to think how much waste is generated by what we consume.• Avoid “use and throw away” products.
• Do an exercise in imagination, many of the things that are thrown away can be repaired, reused or recycled.
• Buy the contents and not the container. Many times you pay more for packaging that is thrown directly into the trash than for the content.
• Choose products with returnable or reusable containers.
• When receiving gifts, do not throw away the paper, it can be saved for other occasions.
• At Christmas many greeting cards are received, instead of throwing them away they can be reused.
• Recycle a gift that you already have at home.
