The type 1 diabetes (insulin dependent) is one of the most frequent chronic diseases in childhood. It occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar levels.

There are more and more diabetic children in Spain. The disease has an important genetic factor, but it is not the only one, an environmental factor such as a virus, a toxic, something in the food or a cause that we do not yet know for diabetes to manifest itself is necessary.

Diabetes can go unnoticed because its symptoms appear to be harmless, but detecting it in time is essential to make an early diagnosis and begin treatment as soon as possible that reduces complications related to the disease.

It is important that we are attentive to a series of symptoms that can indicate the presence of diabetes in the child:

  • Frequent urination: a child with diabetes needs to urinate more frequently and in larger volumes. A sign that may be suspicious is that you start wetting the bed when you no longer do so.

  • Constant thirst: because he loses a lot of fluid when urinating, the child feels unusually thirsty.

  • Excessive hunger

  • Unexplained weight loss: despite always being hungry, the child does not gain weight and often loses it.

  • Fatigue and weakness: the child feels tired because his body cannot convert glucose into energy

  • Irritability: caused by hunger and anxiety.

  • Blurry vision

  • Diabetes may also be suspected if a vaginal fungal infection (candiasis) occurs in a prepubertal girl.

  • Nausea, bad breath, frequent stomach pain and breathing problems can be signs of diabetic ketoacidosis.

If the child has any of these symptoms, although the suspicion is minimal, it is necessary to consult with the pediatrician. He will assess the symptoms and if he considers it he will perform routine glucose tests to confirm or rule out the disease.
