Preterm school at Dénia Hospital

Humanization in the care of premature babies is a priority at the Hospital of Dénia (Alicante), for this purpose it has created the Preterm School, a pioneer program in Spain where parents are instructed on stimulation techniques for your little ones.

The initiative began its march three years ago and today the Hospital collaborates with the Hospital La Fe in Valencia, which has implemented the early discharge of premature babies to favor the bond with their parents.

It is desirable that the tendency to involve the parents of premature babies in their care, both while they are admitted and when they are at home, is widespread. It seems that we were on the right track, but there is still much to do.

The Rehabilitation Service of the new Dénia Hospital through its "Premature School" teaches therapies aimed at premature babies born with less than 37 weeks as well as large premature babies born before week 32 of gestation and with greater chances of developing problems Neurological in the future.

The stimulation of the children consists in encouraging contact with the parents and having them perform exercises such as the curl directed to the baby curling the back and recovering the fetal position that children born at term have.

During their stay in the incubator the premature one usually has very little mobility, so simple exercises such as bringing the hands and feet to the mouth contribute to a better psychomotor development.

Skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding and the kangaroo method are also encouraged to enhance the attachment bond and somehow recover the contact time they have not had during their long stay in the incubator.
