Healthier school menus

The situation in view of the growing number of children with obesity requires that letters be taken on the matter, so it seems to me great news that the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has announced that after Holy Week school menus will be healthier.

If the promises do not fall in a broken coat (we have been hearing about the healthiest menus for a long time), we will agree with all the autonomous communities to implement a strategy that will establish balanced diets by age groups in the school menus and the elimination of products with excess salt, fat or sugar from school vending machines.

Given the poor control that parents have over what our children consume from machines, they should offer more fruit, juices and sandwiches that are not very energetic and much less pastries and sweets.

With regard to children's menus, according to the PERSEO program (for the prevention of childhood obesity) more than half of the school menus analyzed in six autonomous communities are deficient.

The objective is implement healthier menus, with recommendations on consumption frequencies so that the home menu is complemented with that of the school, information to families and a citizen attention to the special needs of each child.

Most school-age children eat at school, so I think that all parents are interested in making sure they have a balanced diet when they are away from home.
