Just as in women "the countdown" is clear to be a mother, it is common for men not to pay attention to age. But men also spend years to have children. Upon reaching 40 or 50, the ability to produce sperm decreases, at least in terms of quality.
Two studies presented at the last congress of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, which has been held in Florida (United States), have revealed that men should also worry about their age when having children, since their chances decrease with Over the years.
According to a first investigation by the Huntington Center for Reproductive Medicine in Brazil, the chances of being parents from the age of 41 decrease 7% per year.
Although the figures will not be too exact, cumulative, or extensible to all cases, because in that way, and simply adding years according to the percentages of the study, the case of men who are fertile after 50 years would not be explained.
The research analyzed the result of 570 in vitro fertilization treatments carried out between 2008 and 2011 and only included cases where the ovules had been donated by healthy and young women. The results showed that the age of men who had failed to fertilize was significantly higher compared to those who did manage to have a baby.
The average age of men whose partners underwent this treatment was 41 years, age at which the chances of getting a pregnancy was 60%. However, each year they aged the probability was reduced by 7% percent.
A second study that supports that warning. The research, from the Center for Reproductive Medicine in Colorado (United States), conducted with mice, analyzed the impact of males' age on reproduction.
The scientists found that only 35% of animals whose age was equivalent to 50 human years managed to fertilize a female, both naturally and with 'in vitro' fertilization. Like the previous study, to rule out that the age of the females conditioned the study, the scientists used only young females.
