More frequent consultations of pregnant women in pharmacies

The pharmacist is usually the closest health agent to the citizen, and we usually go to them for small consultations that (we believe) do not need medical attention. Pregnant women are no exception, and often make frequent consultations in pharmacies during pregnancy.

The problems that are most consulted are headaches (here some natural remedies), constipation, leg pain and heartburn, the most common ills, especially in the last trimester of pregnancy.

The main question of pregnant women is about the medications they can take, although the logical thing is that if the pharmacist has doubts or considers it necessary, the woman is referred to the doctor. In addition, the pharmacist is also often an adviser on dietary habits of pregnant women.

As for drugs, there is a list of safe medications in pregnancy, although they should always be prescribed by the doctor and take them only if strictly necessary, being cautious with the dose.

Taking into account that the pharmacist does not always have the necessary information (and we have already seen how in some cases they misinformed about breastfeeding), it does not seem bad for me to take workshops in this regard, such as the one being carried out by the Official College of Pharmacists of Bizkaia (COFBi) in Bilbao.

Is about "Applied Gynecology for Pharmacists", where pharmacy professionals learn basic notions of the most frequent problems that occur in obstetrics, gynecology and contraception.

In the course, pharmacists will discuss various topics, based on the most common gynecological problems: gynecological infections and inflammations, absent or abnormal bleeding, dysmenorrhoea, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis and, above all, causes, consequences, diagnosis and treatment alternatives pharmacological.

They will also study contraception, pregnancy, the causes and consequences of abortions and the postpartum period. They will also emphasize medication during pregnancy and lactation, studying incompatibilities and pharmacological interactions, as well as the recommended drugs and their indications, and the classification of drugs for the gestation period and subsequent lactation.

A good initiative to attend properly the most frequent consultations of pregnant women in pharmacies, although remember that gynecologists and midwives can clear our doubts.
