A family trip to Poitiers to enjoy the Romanesque and medieval times (1/2)

Poitiers it's full of Romanesque art jewelry The city takes care with care to make it available to travelers who want to enjoy this classic construction style. In Poitiers, work has been done to create pedestrian areas, monument facades have been restored, rest areas have been enabled and tourist areas have been highlighted so that the traveler has a very pleasant stay. And you can enjoy Poitiers traveling with children because the city has a lot of details so that they also have fun.

Of the three marked roads: blue, red and yellow, we moved a little for each of them. The blue line It passes through Notre-Dame-la-Grande, which we saw during the day and especially at night where it looks spectacular with that polychromy as we will see in another article. You can also go through the former Palace of the Counts of Poitou (Dukes of Aquitaine) and today the Palace of Justice with its spectacular courtyard of lost steps and its huge fireplace. By Red line You can visit the Town Hall square that during Christmas was lovely with a small market and a spectacular carousel for children.

The church of Notre Dame la Grande It looks beautiful by day but at night, and not only in summer, it is transformed into a beautiful polychromy created by the artists of Skerzo. It is a creation that offers a different look of the Romanesque monument reminding us that the facade had those polychrome colors in the Middle Ages. In addition, the facade is covered with sculptures that tell stories such as those of Adam and Eve, the Prophets, Nebuchadnezzar, the life of Jesus, San Hilario, San Martín or San Pedro. And it is well worth going through it and stop, especially in its small chapels.

Poitiers is located in the center of France and is, for two thousand years, a reference for merchants, artists and pilgrims who make the Camino de Santiago. We also walk through the square where the Town Hall is and enjoy this huge Carousel.

Another smaller attraction can be seen in the same square where an imposing Town Hall opens to a large esplanade with a Christmas market at this time of year and cheerful terraces in summer. Poitiers is one of the reference cities in the research-oriented university field and its streets are full of young students.

We were impressed by the superbly preserved medieval houses with those woods in sight that can tell stories of several centuries of old Europe.

The family was delighted with the walks we made through the streets of Poitiers organized around the primitive wall. A lot of history in a magnificent city with little more than 100,000 inhabitants and with a lot of services to make the trip to the family very entertaining and spectacular.

We arrived at Poitiers on the train leaving Madrid for Paris and that left us on time in the city after dinner, sleep and breakfast at the Elipsos.

Important note: I have been invited to the City of Poitiers by West France that promotes three regions of western France (Poitou-Charentes, Pays de la Loire and Brittany) in Spain.
