Basque officials will have paternity leave of 18 weeks from September, matching that of mothers

As of September 1, Basque parents working for the Public Administration will have 18-week paternity leave, similar to what the Basque civil servants currently have.

This measure, which would be added to the announcement of the 16-week extension of the paternity leave of Basque workers in the private sector, makes Euskadi the first autonomous community to equate both permits.

Equal, non-transferable and above the Spanish average permits

The measure, which we echoed a year ago when collected in a draft draft of the Basque Public Employment Law, was formalized yesterday by the Government, and will enter into force from September 1.

In this way, parents working in the Basque Autonomous Administration will see their paternity leave extended to 18 weeks, from so that mothers and fathers officials will have equal permits, non-transferable and paid 100% to care for children, both by birth, adoption, foster care or subrogation.

With this, the Basque Government intends to "make a qualitative leap in the area of full equality, and contribute to correcting the imbalance involved in the unequal distribution of childcare tasks between both sexes."

Though this measure only affects Basque public sector workers, it comes to add to the equalization of both permits with which Basque workers in the private sector will also have from next autumn, although the latter will have 14 days less than the officials.

In Babies and more, Euskadi will extend paternity leave to 16 weeks to all parents from autumn

And what happens in the rest of Spain?

The measure places the Basque Country in the first autonomous community, not only in equating both permits, but in having two more weeks with respect to the maternity leave available to other Spanish mothers.

In terms of equality, the Government of Spain has already approved the equalization of both permits to 16 weeks, but this comparison will be progressive and will not occur until 2021. So, for the moment, Spanish parents have a paternity leave from eight weeks

In Babies and more Maternity and paternity leave equal and non-transferable, but what do babies really need?

And in regards to the extension of maternity leave in SpainFor years it has been requested to increase it to a minimum of six months, being consistent with the WHO guidelines that recommend exclusive breastfeeding during that period.

We are happy for the Basque families in which fathers and mothers can enjoy the first months together with their children, but we hope that this measure can soon be a reality in the rest of the autonomous communities.
