The impact of bedwetting in children's camps

In Peques and Más we have already commented that the enuresis It has important repercussions on the child who suffers it because it generates social withdrawal, low self-esteem, lack of motivation, shame or poor school performance. It is also more difficult to attend camps, colonies or sleep at friends' houses. And if the child wets the bed over 5 years, he may suffer enuresis.

Bedwetting is an involuntary loss of urine during the night so we recommend that you go to the doctor, pediatrician or urologist, because you can assess whether the bedwetting is associated with more serious pathologies and will determine the treatment to follow whether they are behavioral measures, pharmacological treatment, etc.

Meanwhile, it is estimated that more than 80,000 children throughout Spain among 5 and 14 years who are or are going to go to summer camps can see their frustrated wishes to suffer enuresis.

It is estimated that 85% of enuresis cases have hereditary origin. The human body produces urine throughout the day in a proportion of 70% during the day and the remaining 30% during the night. This production is regulated by the action of the hormone ADH (anti diuretic hormone) that is synthesized in the brain and reduces urine production at night. People suffering from bedwetting suffer from a disorder that prevents more hormone from being released at night so that urine production decreases, so the bladder fills during sleep and involuntary loss occurs.

90% of enuresis cases have as background a physiological disorder such as delayed bladder maturation or production of nocturnal urine higher than normal, the remaining 10% may be due to an unusual event in the child's life or in his familiar structure. In any case the problem should not be banalized and it is necessary to see a doctor.

For him Dr. Juan Carlos Ruiz de la Roja, director of the Madrid Urological Institute:

The limitation of children with bedwetting when going to a camp is such that they directly avoid going. The most unfortunate thing is that some children who dare to go, the way they use to prevent the escape of nocturnal urine goes directly by not sleeping at night to not urinate. If these children were treated properly, since in 90% of cases the problem is solved with medication, these children could perfectly go to the camp simply taking into account that they should take a small drug before bedtime, which in addition to having very Good tolerance greatly reduces the production of nocturnal urine, which is one of the most important causes that justifies bedwetting. It is very important to reduce in these children the consumption of soft drinks and those that are rich in caffeine, since if not the chances of nighttime escalation are markedly increased.

We hope that the little ones enjoy their leisure time and that they can review their disorder with professional help.
