Do you have cravings? For a healthy smile, healthy cravings

When we talk about unhealthy foods we usually associate them with the risk of obesity, hypertension ... but the mouth can also suffer with those foods. During pregnancy, many women have cravings, those uncontrollable desires to eat something, but not always those cravings are highly recommended ...

However, healthy cravings can give us healthy smiles. And it is precisely during this stage when the woman has to take special care of her oral health.

On the occasion of the second "Oral Health and Pregnancy Campaign", organized by the General Council of Dental Associations of Spain, which ends these days, the General Council of Dietitians-Nutritionists wanted to highlight the importance of choosing healthy cravings for health general of mother and fetus, highlighting the importance of good diet during pregnancy for maternal oral health.

Cravings cover all kinds of foods, from fruits, eggs, pickled gherkins to ice cream, candy or chocolate. And this is where we should control the consumption of foods with a high energy value and a lot of sugar or fat, which increase the risk of increasing the weight of the pregnant woman in excess, or of affecting her teeth.

So, no matter how difficult it is to "control" cravings, whether they are recommended or not, it is important to keep in mind that there are some healthy snacks to replace them.

For certain foods, experts recommend replacing them with others, and they also seem quite appetizing ... Instead of cream, choose a low-fat creamy yogurt; If your craving is chocolate, opt for the black variety; it is better that cookies are low in fat and sugar and substitute salty snacks with roasted and unsalted nuts or vegetable skewers with fresh cheese ...

Instead of sweets or industrial pastries, you can have "alegrana" whole wheat bread with jam, and instead of cereals high in fat and sugar you can mix oat cereals with chopped dried apricots and a little cinnamon.

In short, it is about controlling those foods that are not healthy during any stage of life if they are taken in excess and in this way take a healthier pregnancy and avoid risks to the oral health of the pregnant woman. A whim from time to time is not bad, but you have to control those cravings that are not recommended.
