42.8 percent of accidents happen at home

Of the “Study on Accidents in the Spanish child population”, carried out by the Spanish Association of Primary Care Pediatrics (AEPap) and Mapfre Foundation, we have already provided some useful information such as the essential Decalogue for the prevention of Accidents, or that data indicating that one third of child accidents occur in summer.

Today I would like to highlight some annotations related to types of accidents, relating to the age of the victims, this issue that we had already partially addressed here. It seems that 56.7 percent of the accidents were dropped to the ground or uneven, and in 26.2 percent of the cases there had been blows against objects, people or animals (especially after 5). For ages, although the risk of a foreign body accident is greater between two and four years, tends to stay until age 11.

The frequency of poisoning decreases after 8 years and animal bites usually occur especially between five and seven

As for drowning, suffocation tends to be more frequent between two and four years, although they also occur in children under 2. And they have also been collected crush data, in which the second age group affected is 5 to 7.

It is striking that 42.8 percent of accidents have happened at home, while 57, 2% have done so in all other places (schools, parks, gardens and public roads). At a younger age more accidents at home, and the number of events outside the home increases as they grow.

And even more curious is the fact that in more than 66 percent the children were accompanied by their parents (one or both), which could indicate poor parental vigilance.

Finally, the aforementioned report states that the place in the family also determines the frequency of accidents, resulting in the children who are most injured are the second of two brothers.
