Feet swollen during pregnancy? Learn to prevent them

It seems inevitable, at one time or another during pregnancy. In fact, sometimes it is, no matter how careful you are, no matter how much exercise you do or how hydrated you are ... the feet end up swelling during pregnancy. But let's see how to minimize the risks, since it is not only a problem of comfort or fashion.

It is clear that we will not be able to wear our favorite heels or those shoes that we bought last season and we only wear on one occasion. But swollen feet mean much more: fluid retention, discomfort when walking ...

And it is that the edema, although mild or benign most of the times, can cause problems. Edema is a swelling caused by excess fluid in the tissues and occurs mainly in feet and ankles.

The College of Podiatrists of the Valencian Community has developed a series of recommendations to help pregnant women prevent swollen feet during pregnancy.

We start with an exercise class that will bring us many other benefits during this stage: the long walks, which help improve circulation. In addition, professionals recommend that these be along the beach alternating walking on wet sand, water and dry sand.

It is also very important to control the weight (that is within the established limits, not increase much, follow a healthy, balanced diet and maintain good hydration) and avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Other healthy exercises can be swimming, since in cool or warm water it also relieves heat and promotes circulation.

Remember also that for pregnant women it is not advisable to remain a long time standing, and a few days ago we gave you the advice to avoid the evils derived from this prolonged posture. Nor should we sit for a long time, as it is advisable to take small walks every two hours and do moderate exercise daily.

High temperatures are one of the factors that contribute to swelling of the feet, so you have to avoid long exposures in places where it is very hot and try to keep your body temperature cool (avoid, for example, saunas at this stage).

Caring for your feet by hydrating them daily and even using small massages and performing cold jets are other ways to get your feet in good shape. Let's leave the heels or shoes tight for another occasion: comfortable footwear is paramount.

Before finishing, remember that if there is a sudden swelling (also of hands, face ...), or rapid and high weight gain or is accompanied by severe headaches, you should see a doctor in case of preeclampsia. But do not worry if the only symptom is swelling of the feet, it is very common during pregnancy, in people with obesity ...

In short, although swollen feet during pregnancy They are one of the most common circulatory problems, there are certain ways to prevent them or minimize their risks. The good news is that, with the cold now that summer is over, the swelling subsides.
