Approved increase the number of weeks of maternity leave in Mexico

A few months ago, we announced how maternity leave was in various countries of the world, both European and Latin American, among which was Mexico. Currently, in this country the maternity leave, which is stipulated in the Federal Labor Law, is 84 days, and for some time it has been proposed to extend it.

This week, through a press release, the Mexican Senate reported that the extension of the number of weeks of maternity leave was approved, in which mothers can now have two more weeks.

Chaired by Senator Martha Lucía Micher Camarena, the Commission for Gender Equality unanimously approved the extension of the weeks of maternity leave in Mexico, through an opinion that modifies article 70 of the Federal Labor Law.

This opinion establishes that now working mothers will be entitled to a longer maternity leave: seven weeks before delivery and seven weeks after this, making it a total of 98 days (just over three months) of maternity leave in Mexico.

In Babies and more Maternity leave in Europe and in the world

As we had previously mentioned, the maternity leave in this current country is 84 days (six weeks before delivery and six weeks after delivery), with the possibility of choosing to transfer a few weeks after delivery. The new opinion states that Mothers may transfer up to five of the seven weeks prior to delivery, after their baby is born.

In addition to the extension of the maternity leave, the opinion also states that in the event that the baby was born with any type of disability or special medical care, maternity leave may be up to fourteen weeks after delivery, presenting the corresponding medical documents.

Even though It's good news, there is still a long way to go to be able to obtain a maternity leave that can provide mothers with at least six months with their babies after childbirth, but hopefully it will eventually become a reality.
