A woman who gave birth in her cell alone and without medical attention demands Denver prison for her right to a safe delivery

Childbirth is an extremely important moment for mother and child, and what happens in it is recorded in both brains. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mothers deserve to have a positive childbirth experience, in which their needs are respected and taken care of, as well as having the necessary medical care.

However, this was not the case with a mother, who has revealed the video in which he is seen giving birth alone in his cell and without medical attention, despite having requested it from the staff there.

Diana Sánchez is the name of the 27-year-old woman who in July last year gave birth while in prison because of a crime of identity theft. The time she was in prison was short, but coincided with her last weeks of gestation, since she entered when she was eight months pregnant.

According to the lawsuit he has filed with the City Council and Counties of the city of Denver, as well as the medical health center and six of the workers who were there on the day of the birth of his son, Diana she was denied medical assistance, even though she requested it since he started with contractions he asked the prison staff for help.

A year after what happened, with the help of a law firm, Diana has decided to sue, because she defends her right to have a safe birth and explains in the document that instead of guaranteeing that she had her baby in adequate conditions, the staff forced her to give birth in her cell, dirty and alone, without any medical attention.

As evidence of what happened and with her authorization, the law firm released the shocking video of the cell in which Diana was, and you can see how from five in the morning she asks for help repeatedly, from when she started with contractions until she broke waters.

In the video, Diana is seen lying in the bed of her cell, suffering severe pain with each contraction and screaming in agony for hours, until finally, at 10:44 in the morning, after five hours of requesting help and not receiving it, your baby is born.

The only medical care he received was when his baby was born and a nurse came to see him. It was up 15 minutes after delivery when firefighters arrived and attended to the baby, cutting the umbilical cord and performing routine medical procedures in the newborn.

For this reason, and because it was a traumatic experience for her and her baby, she has decided to sue them, since the prison staff He should have called an ambulance to be taken to the hospital and could give birth in a safe and clean medical environment.

According to information from The Guardian, the jail's medical staff belong to Denver Health, the city's public hospital and were responsible for attending Diana. For now they have not issued any statement because the lawsuit is in process, but a spokesman explained that they have always provided medical attention to the prisoners assigned to them.

On the other hand and according to statements by the Denver sheriff, prison policies have changed to ensure that all prisoners who are at any stage of labor are immediately transferred to the hospital. Previously, this decision depended solely on the nurses present in the prison, but now the staff is also authorized to call an ambulance in situations like this.

Dam or not, All women should receive dignified and respected treatment in their birth, something that evidently did not happen in the case of Diana, who instead of receiving the medical attention she requested, only received indifference and abandonment.
