It is advised to monitor the sleep of snoring children, especially if they also have apnea

During the last Congress of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics, which we talked about here, the topic of snoring children was discussed, which are those that snore more than half of the days without having a cold.

Dr. Ignacio Cruz (from the Montequinto Health Center (Seville) gave a workshop, in which he indicated that parents should be advised to snoring surveillance, especially if accompanied by apneas.

One in ten children snores at night, and 20 percent of them have sleep apnea

Pediatricians should ask about sleep, because it takes many hours of children's lives, and not sleeping well has consequences for their health. Sometimes what happens during the day is a reflection of what happens at night. Parents are responsible for promoting healthy sleep habits, and not neglecting this aspect even if children grow up.

The number of children with apnea has increased, and One of the causes is the increase in childhood obesity. One of the symptoms is fatigue in the morning, and low school performance due to lack of rest. Cardiovascular problems can also be associated because children 'struggle' to breathe.

The treatment of obstructive childhood sleep apnea syndrome is surgical, and involves removing the vegetations and tonsils that obstruct the airway. In some cases, especially in obese children, other types of treatment are investigated, although their effectiveness is not yet well defined. ”
